Canada Visitor Visa FAQs for Indian Travellers

A Canada Visitor Visa, or TRV, lets visa-required travellers visit Canada for tourism, family visits, or business meetings. It is not a work or study permit. CBSA makes the final entry decision at the border.

Most visitors are allowed to stay up to 6 months per entry, unless CBSA gives a different date. Visa validity and stay duration are different: even a 10-year visa does not allow a 10-year continuous stay.

A visitor visa costs CAD 100 per person. Biometrics cost CAD 85 per person when required; an eligible family applying together may have a CAD 170 biometrics maximum. A visa-required Super Visa applicant pays the same application fee. A transit visa is free. Exemptions and other service costs can affect the total.

An officer decides whether to issue a single- or multiple-entry visa and its validity. A visitor visa may be valid up to 10 years, or until passport or biometrics expiry, whichever comes first. Each authorized stay is separate and is usually up to 6 months unless the officer sets a different period.

Evidence can include a valid passport, purpose and length of visit, funds, travel history, employment and home ties, and an invitation where relevant. Biometrics are a separate step when required. No invitation or document list guarantees approval.

A Super Visa is for eligible parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens, permanent residents or registered Indians. It can allow stays up to 5 years per entry. The host must be at least 18, live in Canada and meet current income and invitation rules. Applicants apply outside Canada and need a medical exam and qualifying insurance.

Yes. Apply for a Visitor Record before your current status expires, ideally at least 30 days early. A Visitor Record extends your stay inside Canada, but it is not a re-entry visa.

An officer assesses whether the applicant meets temporary-entry requirements, including a genuine purpose, sufficient funds, admissibility and leaving at the end of the authorized stay. Read the reasons in the refusal decision. A new application should address them with relevant new or corrected evidence; resubmitting the same information does not guarantee a different result.

A transit visa is for eligible visa-required travellers connecting between international flights through a Canadian airport for 48 hours or less who do not already have a valid visitor visa. Longer transit or a visit generally requires a visitor visa. Requirements differ for eTA-eligible travellers and transit-without-visa exemptions. A visitor visa itself does not authorize employment. Work generally requires a work permit unless a specific exemption applies. Business visitors must meet separate conditions. A study permit is generally needed for study, but an eligible course lasting 6 months or less may be completed without one during the authorized stay.
